Nakeya received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from the University of Southern California in 2001 and a Masters in Social Work with a concentration in children and families from the University of Southern California in 2005.  She also received a Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Social Work and Child Welfare and Attendance from the University of Southern California in 2008.

She is currently a member of the National Association of Black Social Workers, and the Association of Play Therapy. She is also currently attaining accreditation in Play Therapy.

Nakeya has worked with survivors of abuse: sexual assault, domestic violence, child sexual, physical and emotional abuse and has extensive experience working with high risk populations gained from past employment with child protective services agencies. She has worked with multiple populations including persons in crisis (such as those managing suicidal/homicidal ideation, psychosis, and Major Depressive Disorder) through her experiences working as a group therapist in an inpatient hospital setting.  Nakeya also has experience working with school-aged children through her work with local school districts and community colleges wherein she assists families and children to manage the social/emotional disturbances that occur in the school environment by providing school-based counseling.

Therapeutic Approach

Nakeya has an eclectic clinical style developed from an array of therapeutic approaches including psychodynamic theory — an approach based on the idea that one's past experiences shape and contribute to our current behaviors, and Rational Emotive Therapy - a method based on cognitive theory and the ideas of Albert Ellis wherein it is believed that one's thoughts and beliefs have a direct influence on behavior and emotions.

Nakeya evaluates each client with an initial consultation to assess the potential of a good client/therapist working relationship.  During this consultation, there will be a discussion about the immediate expectations about the therapy, including fees and the length of treatment.

Following the initial consultation, Nakeya will complete an in-depth assessment session to discuss the client's background, stressors, past and current behaviors, and medical history, as well as the client's needs and expectations in treatment.  Together, Nakeya and the client will develop a treatment plan and continue to monitor and alter the plan as needed throughout the therapeutic process.  Nakeya is able to work with short term crisis-centered therapy as well as long-term therapy.
