I first learned about the secret when I was in high school. If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s essentially the law of attraction with a little bit added to it. For example, if you’re constantly thinking about happy things then you’ll attract good things to your life. Alternatively, if you can only think about negative things, then you’ll end up experiencing some pretty less than favorable events. And it makes sense to me. If one morning when you go into work, your boss yells at you and then it puts you in a bad mood then the rest of your day is likely to be pretty bad as well because everything that you do will be affected by your bad mood. You’ll give off angry vibes and so most people won’t want to be around you, and because you’re isolated, it’s probable that you won’t be very happy. On the other hand, if your boss praises you then you’ll probably be in a good mood and that positive attitude will radiate all around you and it will change your interactions with the rest of the world for the better.
The second part of the secret has to do with visualizing what you want. Let’s say that you want a promotion at work. In order for that to happen, it’s not just enough that you work hard to gain that coveted spot. You also have to picture yourself already having it as well. It’s essential that you imagine yourself in this role (the more detail you have the better it is for you). You have to see yourself in that new office and going about your day to day activities in that new position. It’s also important that you try and feel the emotions that you would feel when you’re in that role. You have to claim it, and the universe will give it to you. But if you start to doubt your future for even a second the universe will snatch it away from you. And that’s why it’s really hard for a lot of us to follow through with the secret. If we don’t get what we want when we want it, we start to doubt ourselves, and when that happens we won’t end up getting what we desire. It could’ve been that our happy ending was within arm’s length of us, but because we started to doubt it, that dream got further and further away. That’s why I continue to struggle with this concept even though it’s been years since I discovered it. Luckily there are ways for us to get better at it.
I came across an article one day that said that the best way to get better at practicing the secret is to start out small. You first time attempting it shouldn’t be when you’re trying to land that dream job. That’s a really high-pressure situation, and unless you know that you’re going to have complete faith in yourself then it’ll be pretty hard to not doubt yourself. So, instead of picturing yourself in that position, start off by picturing something small. But whatever you think about, you have to make sure that it isn’t something that you see or encounter on a regular basis. For instance, the first time I tried this, I focused all of my energy on picturing a candelabrum. I don’t have a lifestyle where I’m likely to see very many candelabra. As a result I figured that this would be a safe bet. So I imagined it, and gave the universe time to bring it to me, and sure enough a few days after I first thought about the candelabrum, I saw one. Now, when I was younger I used to re-watch TV shows that I had already finished, but after I graduated from college I stopped doing that because I didn’t have much time to spend watching reruns. However, for some reason, around the time that I started anticipating the candelabrum, I had begun re-watching New Girl on Netflix. I was going through about half a season every day. I would basically watch it until I got bored and decided to move on with my next activity. One night, I was watching it before bed. I remember that I was tired and that I told myself that I was going to watch one more episode before I went to sleep, but after that episode finished I decided that I would watch one more, and because I decided to do that, I was able to get my candelabrum. About half way into the episode, Winston, one of the main characters, brings out his candelabrum, and when my eyes landed on it, it threw me for a loop. Not only had I decided to re-watch this series out of the clear blue sky, but it also provided me with the reinforcement that I needed to realize that the secret really does work. This little thing gave me the push I needed, and it can give it to you too.
Once you get a taste of how the secret works then you can have more confidence asking the universe, or god, or whatever/whoever you believe in for something. Don’t give up on your dream(s) positive thinker. Your desire may not come when you expect it to, but if you stand strong and believe that you’ll get it then one day it will come to you! Keep believing! Your candelabrum could be right around the corner!
