Here’s to Brighter Days

Have you ever been at a point in your life where it seemed like nothing was going your way? In each and every aspect of your life nothing was happening the way that you wanted it to happen. I’ve been there before, and I’m here again right now, and I’ll definitely be there again in the future. It just seems like there’s a lot going on in my life, but nothing seems to be going the way I want it to. It’s extremely frustrating, especially since I feel like I’m working so hard, but I keep coming up with nothing to show for it. There are some days when I wake up and feel like I should just give up. If I keep putting forth all of this effort and I keep ending up no better off than I was the day before then what’s the point of trying anymore? I feel this way a lot, but I also know that this can never be an option for me, and it shouldn’t be an option for you either.

Whenever I feel like giving up, I try and think of another time that I wanted to give up but decided to keep going. I use these moments as motivation to keep on going…

When I was younger, I was really overweight. All throughout elementary school and junior high, I weighed way more than a person my age should have weighed. I didn’t like that I was big, so when I started high school, I decided to make some changes in my lifestyle that would allow me to lose the excess pounds. I started working out harder, and I started eating less junk food. There were many times throughout this journey when I wanted to give up. I thought that it would be easier for me to go back to my old habits. Working out constantly and eating healthily were not fun. I missed the fatty foods, but I knew that if I wanted to achieve the goal that I set out for myself then I would have to keep on being committed. It wasn’t easy, and I did backslide a couple of times, but when it was all said and done, I probably ended up losing over thirty pounds by the end of my freshmen year. When I looked at myself in the mirror, I was happy with my results. I knew that because I didn’t give up and because I continued to work hard, that I was able to end up healthier and happier as a result. And my results were that much better because I knew how much work I had put in. Because I was able to persevere through the difficulties, it made me that much prouder of being able to achieve my goals.

So I encourage you to do the same thing when you hit a bump in the road. And you don’t have to think of something new whenever you hit a point in your life where you feel like throwing in the towel. Take some time to come up with one instance from your past where perseverance ended up paying off for you. So the next time you start to hear that voice that tells you to stop going, all you have to do is draw on this experience to keep you moving forward. The bigger the memory is, the more hope that it will give you to keep pushing through your present circumstance. Many times when I find myself struggling, I think of when I was trying to lose weight all those years ago. I try and remember how I felt in the moments when I felt like giving up and then I compare those feelings to the feelings that I am currently having in my difficult situation. Because the emotions are similar, I know that I can use this memory to push me to keep on going. Next I think about how proud I was when I lost the weight, and then I use these feelings to help me make it through. I know that if I want to be able to feel those same feelings then I will have to keep on working hard to achieve my goals.

Positive thinker, don’t give up. After every storm there are brighter days. You may be experiencing some stormy days right now, but I guarantee you that there will be brighter days ahead!
