It’s All About Perspective

Last year, I did an activity with some of my students about perspective. Before this activity took place, I took two different colored pieces of paper and taped them together, which meant that one side of the paper was now one color and on the other side of the paper was a different color. Once everyone was in class, I asked for two volunteers to come to the front of the room. Neither of the students that came up knew that I had a piece of paper with two different colored sides that I was getting ready to present to them. Once they were at the front of the classroom, I brought up the piece of paper, making sure that each of the students could only see one color of the paper. Once the paper was in the middle of my two volunteers, I then asked each of them what color they thought the paper was. Each student said the color of the paper that they saw while the rest of the class laughed knowingly about the truth of the paper that was in front of them. With confused looks on their faces, both of my volunteers tried to see what was on the other side of the paper because they didn’t understand how their classmate wasn’t seeing the same color that they saw. Quickly, I rotated the paper so that they were still looking at the same color that they had initially started off with. I asked them how come the other couldn’t see the same color that they were seeing and neither one of them could come up with a reason as to why that was the case. So, after asking them if they were sure about the color of the paper that they said, I decided to reveal the true nature of the activity to them by turning the paper around so that they could each see the color that was on the other side.

The perspective you decide to take in life’s moments can truly shape how you walk through this world. For every situation you encounter, there are multiple perspectives that you can take. And because there are different perspectives, you may end up having different outcomes based upon the perspective that you decide to take.

Some perspectives allow you to look at a given situation and only see difficulties and bad in it. On the other hand, there are perspectives out there that can allow you to see some good in a given situation. Finding a perspective that can help you see a difficult situation in some positive light just might be what you need to get through that difficult situation.

And finding a different perspective isn’t always going to be easy positive thinker. Sometimes you will find yourself in a situation where there’s somebody or something there that’s standing in front of you and blocking you from seeing a different perspective. In the activity I did with my kids, I was literally stopping them from seeing the other perspective, and sometimes the same thing is going to happen to you. But when this does happen, you just have to try even harder to figure out the perspective that you need to see to be able to get through that situation.  Other times, it’s going to be easier for you to figure out a different perspective. Whether it is obvious to you or whether you find someone who helps you to see your situation from a different perspective, make sure that you use this advantage to make it through whatever you’re going through.

Positive thinker, perspective is a very important thing to look at whenever you enter into a new situation. Allowing yourself to shift from perspective to perspective may be just what you need to get to the outcome that you want to achieve. So make sure not to limit yourself to just one perspective in the beginning because doing so may stop you from getting what you want out of a situation. However, once you’ve viewed the various perspectives and once you’ve decided on a perspective that will get you the results that you want to have then you should stick with it so that you can get what you want!

Remember, “The right perspective makes the impossible possible.”
