Positive Thinking for the Positive Thinker in You

Positive Thinking for the Positive Thinker in You

When I was in high school I saw this movie in my AP Psychology class. It was called The Secret. This was a film based on a book that talked about the law of attraction. This law basically states that whatever you spend your time focusing on you will end up attracting into your life. Therefore, if you focus on positive thoughts then you will bring positive things into your world, and if you spend your time thinking negatively then negativity will come to you. This book/movie goes as far as to say that if you picture yourself doing something (down to the last detail), and if you believe that this experience that you’re picturing will happen then it will actually come to be. The important thing to remember is that if you have any seed of doubt then it’s not going to work. The narrator in the film encouraged us to start out with something small. You shouldn’t begin by thinking that you’re going to marry Brad Pitt because the seeds of doubt are likely to creep in when you believe something like that (and then it won’t happen). You’d get discouraged with practicing this law because you and Brad didn’t end up getting married. That’s why you begin with something tiny. For example, you can picture yourself coming home and walking into a house where your significant other has prepared you your favorite meal. Imagine the smell of the food, the plates that are used, and how it’s going to taste. As long as you don’t allow for any doubts to come into your vision, it will happen for you.

When I first heard about this principle, I found it very hard to believe. I happily sat there and watched the movie because it meant that I didn’t have to listen to a new lecture, but I didn’t really care for what the movie was telling me. I went years without giving it another thought until my sister, who was in the same psychology class as me, came home from work one day and told me about an experience she had. She came into my room and asked me if I remembered watching The Secret during our senior year. I told her that I did, and then she responded by saying that she had tried it out earlier that day. She said that normally when she got to work there were no parking spots by the gym, which meant that she would have to park her car far away and walk, but this time there was a spot when she got there. On her way to work, she imagined a specific spot by the front door of the gym being free. She believed that it was going to be there, and when she pulled up to her job it was indeed there. After that experience, it got me thinking about using that little trick in my own life. I never even gave it a chance, but after hearing her story, I told myself that I was going to consciously try to bring positivity into my world.

Now to be perfectly honest with you, I didn’t follow through. I didn’t try it for myself, but my sister isn’t the only person in my life who has had this work positively for them, so even though I haven’t gotten around to trying it yet, I can tell you that it does work. And after writing this, I can honestly say that I’m going to give it a chance because I don’t want negativity to follow me around anymore.

A lot of times, I find myself in a negative head space, and whenever this happens I only end up making things worse for myself. In the back of my mind, I know that if I just brought in a little bit more positive thinking then I would experience more positivity, but it’s not so easy to get out of a toxic line of thought. It takes real dedication. You have to be consciously aware of your thoughts, and if you do find yourself thinking about something negative then you have to catch it soon enough so that you have time to rework it into something that’s more positive.

Sometimes I think that people underestimate the power of positive thinking, but it really does work positive thinker. You just have to have enough will-power to choose to think positively. I challenge you to try implementing the positive end of the law of attraction into your life. Start out with something small like my sister did, and when that works continue to build on your wants and desires. You have the power to create the life that you want positive thinker, you just have to be committed enough to make it happen for you.
