Pushing Forward

During my junior year in college, I participated in a mud run. I had heard all about them and had always wanted to try one out, so when the opportunity presented itself, I went for it. Because it was my first one, I chose to race on the shorter track, but, nevertheless, I still knew it was going to be challenging. It was located in a hilly area of the city, so I figured that I would probably have to run up a small mountain or two. Because I wasn’t used to running uphill, I told myself that as long as I kept a slow jog while making my way up the hill then I would be happy.

When the race finally started, I took off with the rest of the racers. The beginning of the journey was on a flat road, so I had no problem with keeping up a steady pace. I even got excited when I laid my eyes upon the first obstacle. The whole reason that I wanted to participate in this event was so that I could make my way through all of the muddy challenges. That’s why I went through the initial one with a smile on my face. I ran for a few minutes more before I could see the first mountain. And when I saw it, my heart skipped a beat. It was much bigger than I had anticipated, and I just knew that it was going to be difficult for me to climb. Still, I approached it with my goal of maintaining a slow jog up the hill. Half way through, I thought that I was going to be able to stick with my objective for the entire race, but when I looked over to the left I saw another mountain formation that was equally as steep as the one I was currently climbing. At that moment, all I wanted to do was stop. I was scared that I wasn’t fit enough to finish the race, but as I looked around me, I saw all of the other competitors not giving up, and that’s when I decided that I wouldn’t give up either. I set a new goal and told myself that as long as I didn’t pause to take any breaks I would be happy with the outcome of the race. It no longer mattered whether I jogged or not, all that mattered to me was that my feet kept on moving. So, I finished walking up the rest of the first hill, and when I got to the top, I jogged to the next hill, and walked up that one. When I made it through that one, I was proud of myself for not quitting. It was difficult, but I made it through because I chose to keep pushing forward. I was even able to finish the race in a decent amount of time!

Life can be a lot like the mud run I participated in. You may think that you can handle it, but then something comes your way that’s completely unexpected, and it will throw you off balance. You’ll want to give up because pushing through difficulties is pretty uncomfortable, and we all want to avoid that feeling if we can. But if you want to get the most out of your life, you can’t just throw in the towel when things start getting rough. It’s during these tough moments that you really learn a lot about yourself. You realize if you’re somebody who just gives up when things don’t go their way, or you find out if you’re the type of person that can summon all of the bravery that you need to make it through that difficult moment that you’re going through.

Positive thinker there are always going to be challenges that you’ll have to face, but you have to remember to keep on pushing through them. Don’t give up because when you do that, you’ll end up missing out on so many wonderful opportunities. You just have to dig down deep enough and find the courage that you need to push past the obstacles that stand in your way. And you may have to come up with a different way to approach the challenge, but all that matters in the end is that you’re able to overcome it. It’s not going to be easy, but it will definitely be worth it!
