Something to Look Foward To

We all have “bad” days that we go through. Some of us have more than others but no one is immune. Money or power won’t save you from them, but a bit of creativity can help you to see them in a different light.

My current job is fairly stressful. I deal with kids who have behavioral and, or, developmental problems. Every once in awhile one of my clients will have a really good day, but most days aren’t like that, and since I spend most of my waking hours at work, having clients who have bad days also means that I have bad days on those days too. And what makes matters worse is that I have to keep myself cool, calm, and collected when all I want to do is scream in frustration. It’s difficult, but I’m able to do it. Now, I could let my stressful time at work set the tone for the rest of my evening, but I choose not to let that happen.

When I get home, I do things that help me to unwind. The first thing that I do is ditch my work clothes and trade them in for my workout gear. Once I have that on, I pop in P90x or Insanity (or if it’s nice out then I’ll go for a jog) and get ready for an endorphin releasing hour of my life. After my workout is over, I take a nice hot shower that helps me to wash away all of the stress from my day. And while I’m in there, I make sure that I’m singing along to my showtunes that I play on my Spotify Broadway playlist. Even though I’m not good at it, singing also helps me to feel better. And since my post-workout jam session happens to include my favorite type of music, it makes me feel even better! After the shower, I get dressed in my pjs, make something to eat, and then I head up to my room where I curl up in my bed with my dinner and my iPad. Once I’m nice and comfortable, I turn on my tablet and find a show to watch. I’m always home in time to catch my shows on TV live, but after spending a year in London where I could only watch my programs on my iPad, I kind of have gotten used to looking at them on there. Once I’ve finished watching a show or two, I put away my tablet and open up a book. At any given time, I’m usually reading multiple books at once. I always have a Harry Potter book that I’m re-reading (right now it’s Half Blood Prince), but I typically have a new book that I’m getting through as well. This is essentially what my work week looks like. It may not be anything special, but it works for me, and that’s all that matters.

Positive thinker, it’s so important that you’re able to have things to look forward to. You shouldn’t just have things in your life that make you miserable or upset. There should always be something that you can do each and every day that will make you happy. If you do this then your day will never be truly bad. Even if you don’t have as much time on your hands as I do (I realize that I’m a single person who just has to worry about herself, so I have a fair amount of extra time on my hands), you can still find a way to sneak something special in there. It can be as small as getting to eat a little chocolate bar, but you really should try to find something.

I told you what my routine looks like when I want to unwind from a long day, but yours might look different. In fact, I would be pretty surprised if it mirrored mine! You might want to go out to happy hour after you get off of work. After, all who doesn’t love half-priced food and booze! Or maybe you like to go and catch a movie. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what you do. Just find something that you love to do and do it!
